Hallway benches with storage for shoes and bags

A hallway bench gives you somewhere to sit while you pull on boots, and stores shoes or bags underneath. Choose a seat height of 40 to 48 cm, a depth of 30 to 40 cm so the walkway stays clear, and a length of 80 to 120 cm depending on the wall.

Our first pieces are on their way. We are choosing them one by one from European workshops and makers. Tell me when they arrive.

Buying guide

How to choose a bench for the hall

Sitting down to put on shoes sounds like a small thing until you have tried to lace up a child's trainers while balancing on one leg. A bench by the door fixes that, and the space beneath it is ideal for the shoes that would otherwise pile up on the mat.

01

Size

Measure the wall and the width of the hall. In a corridor of about a metre, keep the depth to 30 or 35 cm so at least 75 cm stays clear. Length depends on the space and how many people use it: 80 cm seats one adult comfortably with room for a bag, 100 to 120 cm seats two or a parent and child. Check that the front door and any radiator are not in the way.

02

Seat height

Most benches stand 40 to 48 cm high, similar to a dining chair. Lower seats suit children; higher seats are easier for anyone with stiff knees. A cushion adds 3 to 5 cm, so allow for it if you add one later.

03

Storage underneath

  • Open shelves let shoes air and make it easy to grab a pair.
  • Cubbies give each person a compartment, which helps with children.
  • Baskets hide clutter such as hats, gloves and dog leads.
  • A lift-up lid hides everything, though you need to clear the seat to open it.
04

How many shoes fit

An adult shoe takes about 30 cm of shelf length side by side as a pair, and boots need 45 cm or more of height. A 100 cm bench with two shelves holds roughly six to eight pairs. Count the shoes you wear every week rather than every pair you own; the rest can live upstairs.

05

Materials

Solid wood is sturdy and can be sanded if it gets scuffed by shoes. Painted finishes suit traditional hallways and wipe clean. Metal frames are slim and strong. If you choose a padded or upholstered top, pick a fabric that copes with damp coats and wet dogs, or one with a removable cover.

06

Pairing with other pieces

Hang hooks or a rail above the bench, at 160 to 180 cm, and a mirror nearby for a final check. Some ranges pair a bench with a matching coat rack or tall unit; mixed pieces work too if they share a finish or colour.

07

Benches beyond the front door

The same piece works at a back door or in a boot room, where muddy wellies and walking boots come off. In a bedroom it sits at the end of the bed for dressing, or under a window as a reading seat with a few cushions. A slim hallway bench can also serve as extra seating along one side of a kitchen table when friends come for dinner, then go back to the hall afterwards.

08

Assembly and care

Most benches arrive flat or part assembled, and fitting the legs and shelves usually takes 10 to 20 minutes. Wipe wooden tops with a damp cloth, dry wet shoes before storing them and tighten the screws once the wood has settled.

Frequently asked questions

What size bench do I need for a hallway?

30 to 40 cm deep and 80 to 120 cm long, keeping at least 75 cm of walkway clear.

What height is a hallway bench?

Usually 40 to 48 cm, the same as a dining chair.

How many pairs of shoes fit under a bench?

Around six to eight pairs on two shelves of a 100 cm bench.

Should I choose a bench with a lid or open shelves?

Open shelves let shoes air and are quicker to use. A lid hides clutter but means clearing the seat to open it.
