Mirrors for the hallway, living room and bedroom
A well-placed mirror does three jobs at once: it brings daylight further into a room, makes a narrow hallway feel wider and gives you a last look before you leave the house. Our first pieces are arriving now. Below is a short guide to choosing the shape, size and height that suit each room.
Our first pieces are on their way. We are choosing them one by one from European workshops and makers. Tell me when they arrive.
Buying guide
How to choose a mirror for each room
Start with the wall, not the frame. Measure the space you want to fill and the furniture beneath it, then decide what the glass should reflect: a window, a pendant light or simply more of the room.
01
Hallway
A tall, narrow shape suits most UK hallways, where the wall is long but the floor is tight. Hang it beside the front door so it catches light from the fanlight or glazed panel. Above a console table, choose a width of around two thirds of the table.
02
Living room
Above a sofa or fireplace, leave 15 to 25 cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame. Round and arched shapes soften a room full of straight lines, while a rectangle hung portrait draws the eye up and helps a low ceiling.
03
Bedroom and dressing area
A full length piece leaning against the wall or standing on its own frame lets you check an outfit from head to toe. It only needs to be about half your height to show your whole body, but a taller one is easier to use from a distance.
04
Bathroom
Look for a mirror with a sealed back that resists moisture, and a frame that copes with steam, such as powder-coated metal. Hang it so the centre sits roughly at eye level, about 150 to 160 cm from the floor.
05
Frames and finishes
Brass and gold tones warm up grey or white walls, black metal sharpens a pale room, and oak or rattan brings texture. A frameless mirror with a bevelled edge is the quietest choice when the wall already has plenty going on.
Frequently asked questions
Where should you put a mirror in a living room?
Beside or opposite a window to bounce daylight back into the room, or above the sofa or fireplace. Leave 15 to 25 cm between the furniture and the bottom of the frame.
How high should a mirror be hung?
Aim for the centre of the glass at about 150 to 160 cm from the floor, which is eye level for most adults. Above furniture, measure up from the furniture rather than from the floor.
What size mirror goes above a console table?
About two thirds of the table's width looks balanced. A 100 cm console takes a mirror of roughly 60 to 70 cm.
