Rechargeable lamps for tables, shelves and terraces

A rechargeable lamp goes where a cable cannot, such as the middle of a dining table, a shelf far from a socket or a garden table on a summer evening. Charge it, then carry it from room to room. Our first cordless lamps are arriving from European makers, with free UK delivery from €89.

Buying guide

How to choose a cordless lamp

When comparing rechargeable lamps, look first at the stated runtime, which usually falls as brightness rises, and at the charging time and port. USB-C is now the most common. A touch dimmer helps you balance light against battery life. For outdoor use, choose an IP44 rating or higher and bring the lamp in during heavy rain. Lithium-ion batteries last longest when you avoid running them completely flat and keep them away from frost and direct heat. Many models can stay plugged in on a bedside table and work like a normal lamp, so the same lamp can do two jobs, at the bedside all week and on the terrace at the weekend.

Frequently asked questions

Are rechargeable lamps worth it?

Yes, wherever there is no socket nearby or you want to move the light around, such as a dining table, a terrace or a bookshelf. On a bedside table next to a socket, a wired lamp is simpler.

Can you leave a rechargeable lamp plugged in all the time?

Most modern lamps manage their own charging and can stay plugged in, but check the maker's instructions. Unplugging now and then helps the battery last longer.

How long does a rechargeable lamp battery last?

Each charge typically lasts several hours, more on a low setting. The battery itself usually keeps working well for a few years before its capacity drops noticeably.
