Picture frames for photos, prints and gallery walls
Picture frames do more than protect a print. A mount gives it room to breathe, the moulding sets the tone, and the right size makes even a phone photo look considered. Start with the size of the image, then decide on a mount, and choose the finish last.

Buying guide
How to choose a frame
A frame is described by the size of the image it holds, not its outside dimensions, which surprises many people. A 10 x 8 inch frame takes a 10 x 8 print, or a smaller one with a mount.
Mounts
A mount is the card border between the image and the frame. It keeps the print off the glass, adds space around it and lets a small image fill a larger frame. White or off white is the safe choice. A wider mount looks more gallery like.
Wood or metal
Oak and other natural woods suit most homes and warm up black and white photography. Black frames give strong contrast and work well with posters and graphic prints. Thin metal frames in brass or black look light and modern, a good choice when you want the image to dominate.
Standing or hanging
Smaller photo frames often have a stand on the back for desks and shelves, and many can be hung as well. Check which way the stand fits, portrait or landscape, before choosing the photo. Larger frames should hang from two points or a wire so they stay level.
Glass or acrylic
Glass is clearer and resists scratches. Acrylic is lighter and shatterproof, better in children's rooms and for large frames.
Hanging a gallery wall
Lay the frames out on the floor first, keep 5 to 8 cm between them and place the centre of the group at around 145 to 150 cm. Paper templates on the wall save holes.
Protecting prints
Hang precious photos away from direct sun, which fades colour over time, and out of steamy bathrooms and kitchens. An acid free mount stops the card yellowing and damaging the print.
