Plant stands for houseplants

A plant stand lifts a houseplant closer to the light and frees up floor space. Match the ring or top to your pot, usually 15 to 30 cm across, and choose the height by the plant: 20 to 40 cm for large floor plants, 60 to 80 cm to bring a trailing plant up to eye level.

Our first pieces are on their way. We are choosing them one by one from European workshops and makers. Tell me when they arrive.

Buying guide

How to choose a plant stand

Indoor plants grow best when they get the light they need, and a few centimetres of height can make a real difference in a room with small windows.

01

Size and fit

Measure the pot at its widest point and at the base. A ring-type stand holds the pot by its rim, so the diameter needs to match closely; a flat top just needs to be a little wider than the base. Large pots full of wet soil are heavy, so check the maximum load.

02

Height

Low stands of 20 to 40 cm suit big floor plants and keep pots off cold tiles. Mid-height ones of 50 to 80 cm bring trailing plants to eye level beside a sofa or in a corner. Tiered plant stands hold several small pots by a window and take up little floor space.

03

Protecting the floor

Always use a saucer or an inner pot without holes. Wood stands need a waterproof saucer and the odd check for damp; metal stands are easy to wipe. Felt pads stop scratches on wooden floors.

04

Light and placement

Place sun-loving plants near a south or west window, and shade lovers further back. Turn the pot every few weeks so the plant grows evenly. Keep plants a little away from radiators, which dry the leaves and the soil, and from cold glass in winter.

05

Materials and style

Wooden plant stands bring warmth to a living room and suit Scandinavian and mid-century interiors. Black or brass metal is slim and lets the plant take the attention. Bamboo and rattan suit lighter rooms. For a group, choose stands of two or three heights and arrange them with the tallest at the back, so every plant gets its share of light.

06

Indoor or outdoor

Most indoor plant stands are not made for rain. On a balcony or patio, use galvanised or powder-coated metal and bring wooden pieces inside for winter.
