Executive office chairs with a high back and deep seat

An executive office chair is the armchair of office seating: a high back, generous padding, wide armrests and a seat you sink into slightly. At home, it suits a study or a desk that also serves as a reading corner. Comfort comes first, but the adjustments still decide if you can work in it all day.

Buying guide

How to choose an executive chair

The difference from a standard task chair is in the build. Executive office chairs have a taller backrest that supports the shoulders and often the head, thicker foam and a heavier base. They are designed for comfort over long sittings rather than for a brisk, upright posture.

01

Upholstery

  • Leather: Ages well and is easy to wipe, but it can feel warm in summer and cold on a winter morning.
  • Faux leather: Cheaper and easy to clean; better grades resist cracking, while cheaper ones can peel after a few years.
  • Fabric or bouclé: Breathes better and looks softer in a living room or bedroom. Choose a tight weave if you have pets.
  • Mesh back: Some designs combine a padded seat with a mesh back for airflow.
02

Tilt mechanism

A basic centre tilt lets the whole seat rock back. A synchro mechanism tilts the back further than the seat, which keeps your feet on the floor while you recline and is the better choice for long days. Check that the tension can be adjusted and that the chair locks upright.

03

Fit

Thick padding can hide a poor fit. Your feet should rest flat with your knees roughly level with your hips, and there should be a few fingers of space between the seat edge and the back of your knees. If you are under about 1.65 m, look for a shallower seat; if you are over 1.85 m, check that the backrest reaches your shoulders.

04

Armrests and desk height

Fixed, wide armrests are typical of this style. Measure them against your desk: if they sit higher than the underside of the desktop, you cannot pull the chair in, and you end up reaching for the keyboard. Height-adjustable arms avoid the problem.

05

Base, castors and weight

A five-star base in steel or aluminium is steadier than plastic under a heavier chair. Check the stated maximum user weight, often 110 to 150 kg, and choose soft castors for wooden floors. A swivel version on glides rather than castors works well if the chair doubles as a reading seat.

06

Size and space

These chairs are bulky: allow for a seat width of 55 to 70 cm and a base of around 70 cm across. In a small room, check that there is space to recline without the headrest hitting a shelf or wall, and that the chair can tuck beside the desk when you are not using it.

Executive office chairs or a task chair?

Pick an executive office chair if you value a high, cushioned back and like to lean back while thinking or reading. Choose a task chair if you sit upright, type all day and want every part adjustable. Every order comes with free UK delivery from €89 and a 2-year warranty.

Frequently asked questions

What is an executive office chair?

A high-backed, well-padded office chair with wide armrests and a tilt mechanism, built for comfort over long sittings.

What makes an executive office chair different from a standard office chair?

A taller back, thicker padding and usually a heavier base. Standard task chairs are more upright and often offer more adjustment.

Are executive office chairs suitable for long working hours?

Yes, if the fit is right: feet flat, lower back supported and armrests that let you reach the desk. A synchro tilt helps over a full day.

Leather or fabric for an executive chair?

Leather is easy to wipe and ages well; fabric breathes better and looks softer in a home. Faux leather is the budget option.
